ISE Seeks Changes in UK Car Parks for Modern Cars
The Institution of Structural Engineers (ISE) has recently issued new guidance indicating that car parks in the UK must adapt to accommodate the increasing size and weight of modern vehicles. Many of the existing car parks were designed during a time when cars were smaller and less technologically advanced. Consequently, there are growing concerns that multi-storey car parks constructed between the 1960s and 1980s might pose safety risks to drivers.
The guidance from The Institution of Structural Engineers emphasises the need for careful consideration in designing multi-storey car parks, particularly due to the surging popularity of larger SUVs, electric vehicles (EVs), and cars equipped with advanced technology and safety features compared to previous decades. Experts from the institution have contributed to the guidance, highlighting the significant increase in the weight of modern vehicles, which could potentially make numerous car parks hazardous.
Chris Whapples, an esteemed Fellow of the Institution, has expressed that many of the 6,000 multi-storey car parks in the UK could be struggling to handle the weight of modern vehicles. He warns that some of these older car parks, especially those in a state of disrepair, may face a risk of partial collapse if the issue is ignored. Whapples led a team of ten experts who conducted a thorough review of the matter and recommended that car park owners have their infrastructure assessed by engineering firms to identify the need for strengthening measures.
Nonetheless, some car park owners may prefer implementing weight limits rather than investing in costly strengthening work. This approach could be seen as a compromise to address the issue without resorting to extensive renovations.
The research conducted by The Institution of Structural Engineers has not only highlighted the importance of reviewing car parks for safety but also shed light on the consistent growth in vehicle size and weight over the years. According to data from motor1, there has been a 21% increase in the average curb weight of cars sold in Europe between 2001 and 2022. Factors contributing to this weight increase include the rise of EVs and the popularity of SUVs, as well as the addition of more features in modern vehicles.
Moreover, the study indicates that while car models have evolved in size and weight, car park infrastructure across the UK has remained largely unchanged. This discrepancy could potentially lead to safety concerns and calls for urgent action to adapt car parks to meet the demands of contemporary vehicles.
It is essential to recognise that the issue extends beyond car parks, as the trend toward larger and heavier cars also has a negative impact on the environment. Green NCAP's findings in March 2023 highlighted that the increasing size and weight of vehicles contribute significantly to climate change and higher energy demands.
