eBay's 'Certified Recycled' program has been relaunched which enabled drivers to save £99 million in 2022 through used car parts.

eBay, the renowned online retail platform, is relaunching its 'Certified Recycled' secondhand parts program with a dedicated website portal catering to parts sold by accredited vehicle dismantlers. The relaunch comes as eBay's research indicates that drivers saved an impressive £99 million in the previous year by opting for second-hand parts over new replacements for worn-out or damaged items. In addition to the financial benefits, eBay emphasises the positive environmental impact of its Certified Recycled parts, which can be up to 70% cheaper than their new counterparts. The company claims that online shoppers using its platform saved 16,000 tonnes of CO2 and diverted 3,000 tonnes of waste from landfills in the past year by embracing the purchase of used car parts.

Addressing Supply Chain Challenges:

While cost savings are a significant incentive for many buyers, the persisting supply chain delays for new parts due to the ongoing pandemic have played a pivotal role in driving demand for second-hand or recycled items. Repairers and insurers, faced with extended waiting periods for new parts, are increasingly turning to used 'Green part' alternatives. Garages are advising vehicle owners to independently source used components for subsequent fitting, while insurance companies are even incorporating policy clauses that permit the use of recycled parts for repairs, regardless of driver preferences.

Certified Recycled Standards and Vendors:

Pic-Up Spares are part of eBay's Certified Recycled scheme and have undergone auditing and certification by the Vehicle Recycler's Association (VRA) to ensure compliance with established standards. These standards encompass the accurate identification, documentation, testing, and grading of parts, which must match the specifications of 'original equipment' and come with guarantees against defects or failures. The VRA specifies that insurers only employ grade-A recycled parts if they are not safety-related and are salvaged from a car younger than the one being repaired.

Evolving Market Dynamics:

While improvements are being made in the vehicle scrappage industry's standards, the prices of second-hand parts have been steadily increasing over the past few years, primarily driven by escalating manufacturer prices for new parts.

Savings Illustrations:

eBay provides examples of typical cost savings achieved through its Certified Recycled offerings. For instance, a scrapped 2020 VW Golf door mirror is priced at £200, compared to £305 for a new mirror, resulting in a saving of 34%. Similarly, a scrapped MINI headlamp assembly costs £275, whereas a new one is priced at £598, allowing buyers to save 54%.
