Driving Theory Tests Have Changed Again
Since April 2021, learner drivers sitting their theory test across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will sit a new type of theory test. The new test is designed to be more inclusive of learners with learning difficulties. Before taking their practical driving test, learners will still need to get 43 out of 50 questions correct to pass the theory test.
The current theory test comprises 50 multiple-choice questions over 57 minutes, followed by a hazard perception test. Part of the test involves reading a case study and then answering five questions about it, which are designed to test your knowledge and understanding of highway code rules.
However, from 14 April 2021, drivers will no longer sit the case study section, instead they will watch one video clip and answer 3 questions regarding what they have seen. The video will be silent, and learners will have the option to play, pause, scroll and expand the video via buttons displayed on the left-hand side of the screen. The right-hand side will display the question and 4 possible answers. Learners can play the video as many times as required before answering the question and moving onto the next one.
Any learner that has failed a test and takes the test again after April 14 2021will sit the new style test. Learners who have had their theory test cancelled or moved to April 14 onward will sit the new style theory test.
