The Transport & Environment's (T&E) recent investigation into the dimensions of new vehicles revealed a concerning trend. The average width of new cars surged to 180.3 cm in the first half of 2023, marking a significant increase from 177.8 cm in 2018.
Among the top 100 new cars sold in Europe during 2023, a staggering 52% exceeded the minimum width required for on-street parking spaces (180 cm) in major cities such as London, Paris, and Rome.
Moreover, off-street parking poses challenges even for average-sized new cars (180 cm wide), with many large luxury SUVs no longer fitting into standard parking spaces. These SUVs, measuring around 200 cm wide on average, leave limited room for manoeuvring, as typical parking spaces measure around 240 cm.
